Beautiful night in the Baltic
2016-07-05 - Kappsegling, ÅF Offshore Race
After a beautiful night in the Baltic the bridges at Sandhamn are starting to be filled up with ÅF Offshore Race boats. From nine thirty Monday evening until seven o´clock Tuesday morning app. 30 boats have reached the finish.
Britt-Marie was the fastest Classic boat to and from Visby in ÅF Offshore Race Classic and shortly after 21:30 on Monday evening she stretched, with almost no steering speed, over the finish line at Skanskobb – only a boat length before Hyundai, Maxi 100 footer, who took line honour for ÅF Offshore Race around Gotland.
The whole leg from Visby to Sandhamn has been a nerve wrecker about who should hear the finish shot first. Britt-Marie was behind Beatrice Aurore for a long time and everyone thought that “Bea“ would be the first to finish. But during the very last miles of the 250 nautical miles long course Britt-Marie gained on Beatrice Aurore and the boats where so close that they almost had a duel of their own sailing towards Almagrundet.
Around seven this morning the boats sailed 7–9 knots when passing the finishing line at Skanskobb. And the wind is stabile during the day and we will see an ongoing flow of boats to Sandhamn. Today´s wind prognosis for Gotska Sandön is W around 6-8 m/s. In Classic only 120 year´s old EOL and Vandia where still on the course around seven this morning. Therefore we know that Ballad, owned by the family Salén, wins the class for the third year in a row.
In SRS total the leader is last year´s winner PAC-MAN where Jimmy Hellberg this year sails Double Handed and in ORCi total the leader is Jacob Wallenberg in his new Club Swan 42 Regina 2.0. But a lot can still happen with the results.
